Implants are on the cutting edge of dental technology, and are arguably the single best option for replacing a missing tooth or teeth.
In the past, missing teeth were replaced either with bridges or removable dentures. Bridges require alteration of neighboring teeth, and dentures can be difficult to wear and at times uncomfortable. Dental implants overcome the drawbacks of both bridges and dentures.
A dental implant consists of a screw that is placed in the bone where a tooth is missing. This screw, over time, becomes fused with the bone in a process known as osseointegration. Fusion with the bone makes the implant extremely stable and capable of standing up to everyday wear and tear for many years. Once the screw is fused with the bone, a crown is placed atop the screw, giving you a brand new “tooth” that will never get a cavity!
Implants also have applications for complete dentures. In some cases, implants can be placed in certain areas of your mouth that allow a denture to snap on to them, rather than rely on suction and adhesives alone.
